Avalanche awareness

Read the snowpack before the snowpack reads you.

The mountain's weather

An avalanche is not bad luck. It's a decision, made for you by the slope, the snow, and the day. Learn to read all three.

What to read

slope 30–45° is the danger zone
aspect wind-loaded and lee slopes
layers weak layers under slabs
signs whoompfing, shooting cracks

The gear

Beacon, shovel, probe — and a partner who knows how to use them. Gear is only as good as the hour of practice you did last week.
